All of our engineers are Gas Safe registered. What does this mean and why is it important to you?

What is the Gas Safe Register?

The Gas Safe Register is the official gas registration body for the UK, the Isle of Man and Guernsey, appointed by the relevant Health and Safety Authority for each area. By law, all gas engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register.

Gas Safe registered engineers

All of our Gas Safe engineers have been checked to ensure they are competent and qualified to do your gas work safely and legally. And all of them carry Gas Safe Register IDs, showing the type of work they are qualified to do, so you can be confident about their abilities.

Illegal gas fitters

Badly fitted and poorly serviced gas appliances are extremely dangerous. And there are cowboys out there hoping to make a quick profit from you, without caring about the harm they could cause.

However, the solution is simple - always demand to see an engineer’s ID or check whether they are registered on the Gas Safe Register.

All of our engineers carry Gas Safe Register ID, showing the type of work they are qualified to do, so you can be confident about their abilities.

Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning

Unsafe gas appliances produce CO, which is a highly poisonous and sometime deadly gas. And it is one of the reasons why it is essential you use Gas Safe registered engineers.

Symptoms of CO poisoning are similar to flu, food poisoning and even tiredness. Other signs include:

  • Headaches, dizziness, nausea and breathlessness.
  • The fact that the symptoms only occur when you are home and they disappear when you leave home.
  • Others in the house experience the same symptoms.

Ultimately, someone suffering from CO poisoning will collapse and lose consciousness.

If you suspect you have been affected by CO poisoning, get fresh air immediately. Open doors and windows, and leave the house. If necessary, see your doctor or go to hospital. In situations of immediate danger, call the National Gas Emergency number (0800 111 999) immediately.

We strongly suggest you fit an audible CO alarm. We would be delighted to advise you on this and to fit suitable, potentially life-saving CO alarms.

Gas Safe leaflets

The Gas Safe Register provides leaflets on gas safety. If you would like us to send you free copies, please give us a call and we will be happy to do so.

Gas safety in the home

We are happy to provide you with detailed advice about gas safety in your home. We are also happy to repeat the Gas Safety Register tips for you to consider before you call us:

  1. Make sure all your gas appliances, including boilers, gas cookers and gas fires, are safety-checked annually.
  2. Always use a Gas Safe registered engineer to fit, fix and check gas appliances in your home.
  3. Always ask to see an engineer’s Gas Safe ID card and check the back of the card to ensure he or she is qualified to carry out the specific type of gas work you need.
  4. Recognise the symptoms of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning (see above).
  5. Check gas appliances for warning signs that they are not working properly, for example, lazy yellow flames instead of crisp blue ones, black marks or stains on or around the appliance and too much condensation in the room.
  6. Buy an audible CO alarm for your home and make sure it is located near to your gas appliances in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidance. CO can leak from appliances and kill.
  7. Only use gas appliances for their intended purpose. For example, do not use a gas oven to heat a room or use a gas barbeque inside your house.
  8. Always ensure there is enough ventilation for your gas appliances to allow them to burn correctly and make sure you are not blocking any air vents that provide an air supply to the gas appliance.
  9. Anybody working with gas has to be Gas Safe registered by law. Report someone working without registration or call Gas Safe Register on free phone number 0800 408 5500.
